Hill City Report - 13 December 2009

13 / 12 / 2009

It was an awful strong windy day with showers of rain at times for the small number of club members that turned out for the weekly track and field meeting on Saturday. It was a modified programme A as a lot of our younger High School members were in Timaru competing in the National Secondary Athletic Champs.

Stephen Pinker won the men's 35 Discuss 1.50kg throw, the 6kg hammer throw and then did the 1500m. Alex McEwan came second in the Masters men 35+ 1500m and then won the masters men 400m (his first one in a couple of years).

Matt Bixley ran in the 1500m, 200m and 400m, all within half an hour and not a bad effort considering he did the Kepler challenge the week before.

William Sue Hoy took out the men 17 to 19 400m and Samantha McAuley took out the girls 14 and under 100 and 200m.

In Timaru at the Secondary School National Track and field champs our club members did very well and congratulations to all of you that went up there and competed. Rebekah Greene won the senior girls 3000m and came 2nd in the 1500m. Alex Gorrie won the senior boys 6km road race. Matthew Aittkenwon his AWD section Javelin 2nd in the discus, 3rd in the 200m. Lauren Wilson came third in both the senior girls 100m and 200m. William Scorgie came third in the open 2000m boys open steeplechase and 8th in the senior boys 3000m.

Some of our athletes made it into finals and did very well also - these were Toby Batchelor 6th in the junior boys 300m and 12th in the junior boys 1500m. MacKenzie Haugh 7th in junior boys high jump, Hamish Finnie 8th in senior boys shot put. Joe Beamish 8th in the year 9 boys 3km road race. Shauna Pali came 15th and Bella Bloomfield 20th in the senior girls 4km road race.

Hill City Report - 14 November 2009

14 / 11 / 2009

What a difference a week makes, after the wind it was a very hot sunny day and made for some very good running in the weekly track and field meeting held at the Cali. This week was programme A which incorporated the Ness Handicapped Mile cup.

Christopher O'Connel won the men's 14 and under high jump, John Gilmore won the men's 17 and under long jump and third in the 100m and backing up from winning the Otago junior men's decathlon title.

The Ness Cup was run in hot temperatures and was won by Graham Helm of Ariki. The first Hill City runner home was Wayne Van Gorp who was sixth across the line with Jake Henderson right behind him and Alex McEwan crossing in 10th. Bella Bloomfield was the first and only Hill City women to finish. Michael Ogle was the fastest Hill city male with the fourth fastest time of 5:08:04. Alex McEwan was the next fastest in 5:08:22 (5th fastest) and Jake Henderson 6th fastest time 5:14:79. Tom Hunt came second in the Senior men's 1500m with Elliot O'Sullivan coming third. David Holloway ran an impressive 1500m in the Masters men 35+ to come 5th and break 5mins for the first time with 4:56:63.

7 / 11 / 2009

Congratulation to Shireen Crumpton for winning the Auckland Half Marathon women's title on Sunday the 8th of November, which was also the New Zealand Half Marathon Championships as well. She also took out the New Zealand women's title as well in the time of 1:15:59. Kim Herbert Loiser came 10th in her first race in some time with 1:30:28.

The weekly meeting at the Cali saw the sun still out but it was very strong wind on the back straight that made running and throwing difficult at times. Well done to Bella Bloomfield who won the women's 17 to 19 javelin throw with 25.65 m and then came second in the 800m. Well done to Rosie Craven who did another personal best in the w under 14 Pole Vault with 2.15 m.

Philip Jowsey won the men's 20 to 34 100m and came second in the 200m. It was a clean sweep to the Hill city under 19 women with Rebekah Greene winning, Sara McLaren 2nd, Shauna Pali 3rd and with Laura Curruthers 4th and Clare Hodge 5th. This weekend is the Ness Cup Handi capped mile.

Last Tuesday night saw the runners and walkers return to Logan Park for the last of the Fun Run and walk 5km series. There were good numbers again as there has been all through out the series (and good racing too).

Kevin Duggan won the third 1500m race of the day with his fastest 1500m, then backed it up with a tough 500m. It was good to see Richard Fogarty have a run in the 1500m - to get third to Kevin was a very good effort.

Toby flett ran a sub 50 sec 400m and came second in the men's 17 to 19 while Daniel O'Shea won the senior men's 400m in 48 secs.

This weekend was the last club run for the season from the clubrooms, but it wasn't the last event on the harrier calender as the National Road relays are on in Christchurch this weekend.

There was a small but keen group of members that braved the cold for a run through McGouns and other parts of Dunedin. Bruce Bieth even donated a clock to the club.

On Sunday morning the club held its Hill Free Half Marathon in Outram. Congratulation to Wayne and Rachel Van Gorp for organising yet another fantastic event - everything ran very smoothly. The conditions for the 2km for 12 and under, the 10km walk/ run and half were a little cool with the night bringing snow to quite low levels on the hills but very good for running.

Ollie O'Sullivan continued his good form by winning the Half marathon in just 1hr 16min and he was also the first Hill City man home, followed by Tom Hunt in 1hr 19min with Kevin Duggan just behind him in 1hr 19min as the first Master home (not only for the club but the whole of the race) and Brian Simpson was the third club open man home.

In the women's 10km Rachel Kingsford won the women's section with Rose Robinson first to finish in the the 10km walk.

Congratulations to Matt Bixley who won his race in a 24 hour race in Adelade. He completed 200 laps.

Then they will be running and walking from Chingford Park on the 20th, Bayfield inlet 27th and a final run back at Logan Park on 3rd November. In the under 12 race Aston Wilson came third across the line in the boys race and was the second fastest boy.

The pot luck dinner at the club rooms went ok as a few hardy members turned up ready to eat and then do a quiz night but the All Blacks test match kept a lot of people away so the quiz has now been postponed to a later date when there is not going to be a clash with the mighty All blacks (and for the record the All Blacks won).

Congratulations to Paula Whiting who came second in the Women's 20-34 grade in the South Island Cross Country Championships in Christchurch on Saturday. Also congratulations to Shireen Crumpton who came third in the Gold Coast Half Marathon on Sunday with a time of 1hr 14mins and Val Musket who was 1st Women 55 in the Gold Coast Marathon in the time of 3hr 20min.

The weather was awful on Saturday but it didn't stop a few hardy tough members from having a run from the club. There was three packs the fast pack under Tom Hunt going up through Ross Creek and back with Andrew Hall, Kerrin Williams, Richard Fogarty. There was even a bit of drama, as the group were almost back at the clubrooms when the pack leader slipped over, took a gash out of his leg and had to be taken to A & E.

The medium pack went up the Bullet Track, around the road through Ross Creek and then around the reserve before heading back through the top of the gardens to the clubrooms. In the pack was Kevin Duggan, Chris O'Kane, Rebeka Greene.

The slow Pack drove up to Ashbourne Hall in Taieri Road and did a run around there. Then all came back to a warm afternoon tea and stories about their runs.

This Saturday is the Otago Cross Country Champs in Waikouaiti.

On Saturday the club were guest of the Leith club at Chingford Park. With the Balclutha Half Marathon and 10k run and walk being on the next day there was still a very good turn out by the club. It was good to have Ian Craven there as he has just had a leg operation.

The fast park went up Bathuns gully and down North Road. In that pack was Matt Bixlley and Richard Fogarty.

The medium pack went up through Ross creek. In that pack was Richard Barker and Stephen Bloomfield.

The children were lead up Baldwin street by the Harrier manager and then round the back-tracks at Chingford park. In that pack was Jessie Murphy and Rosie Craven.

There was apack that went out for about half an hour for those that were competing in Balclutha. They were Elliot and Oliver O'Sullivan, Andrew Hall and Kerrin Williams.

The club was then treated to great afternoon tea. Well done to those who competed in the Balclutha Half marathon and 10km run and walk. Good luck to Shireen Crumpton and Val Musket who are competing in the Gold Coast Half and Full Marathon on Sunday.

Last Saturday the club played host to the Civil Service club at the clubrooms at Logan Park. There was a huge turn out by both clubs so most of the packs were very big.

The fast-pack, under Elliot O'Sullivan, went up signal hill and it was mixture of old and young as Andrew Hall, Kevin Duggan and Stephen Bloomfield went along for the run. The medium pack ran through Ross Creek to McGoun's track and back to the clubrooms .Running in the pack was Ivan Pali, Grant Motion, Henry Ritchie and Wayne and Rachel Van Gorp.

After all the packs got back to the club there was a very big and yummy afternoon tea to be consumed.

Congratulations to Rebeka Greene who had an outstanding run at the national Secondary Schools Cross Country Champs in Nelson to come third. Also to our other club members who took part. This Saturday Hill City are the guest of the Leith Harrier club.

Hill City Report - 13 June 2009

13 / 06 / 2009

On Saturday the club were guest of the Ariki club and held its club cross country champs with them. The weather was so different to last year when the cross country was cancelled due to foul weather, it was fine and sunny with no wind.

It was an impressive turn out by the club members as each of them either ran or drove up to Rotary Park to the Cross Country course. There was also a couple of guest runners as well as Ben Anderson from the Caversham club wanted to get a race in before the Secondary Schools Country Championships this weekend. Also, Melissa Moon from the Scottish Harriers Club in Wellington who was down to watch the All Blacks France test and wanted to do a cross country race as well.

The conditions were perfect and even a slight course change from last time was met with approval from all who took part.

Jessie Murphy was first across the line in the children 12 and under race with Oliver Molteno second.

In the under 16 race it was the case of the two brothers fighting it out for line honours and the younger brother Chris McNoe held on to be first across the line from his fast finishing brother Cameron.

In the main race which was 5km it was one of the clubs newer members who took out the line honours Matt Bixley who was pipped on the line in the Ness Cup in November was first across the line with David Holloway second to complete his 5 laps. It was a great day and most athletes enjoyed themselves.

This weekend the club are playing hosts to Civil Service from the Hill City Clubrooms.

On Saturday many of the club members were at Wingatui Competing in the Edmond Cup Cross Country races. The weather was very cold, windy and at times wet.

Rhys Baily won the boys under 14 from Chris McNoe who came second. In the under 14 girls Sophie Russell came second and Meg McKay came third.

Becky Greene won the women's under 16 and Larua Carruthers came third and Emma Lloyd came 4th and Natasha Chignell came 5th.

In the men's under 19 Cambpell Garry backed up from his fine win in the senior boys Otago Secondary Schools Cross Country Champs with another strong run to take out the race from Alex Gorrie who finished third.

Toby Batchelor had a very good run in the boys under 16 to beat Cameron McNoe who came second.

It was a very good day from our junior members especially after most of them were racing on the same ground three days before.

Mrytle Rough came third in the masters women 50+ and Sally Nicol fourth.

In the senior men's race it started hailing as the race started and kept hailing for most of the race. Oliver O'Sullivan came 4th with Mike Wakelin coming 7th and Tom Hunt coming 8th.

Hill City Report - 1 June 2009

01 / 06 / 2009

Congratulations to the club members who went up to Christchurch and competed in the half marathon, full marathon or the 10km.There was some outstanding results from our members. In the Half Marathon Tom hunt, 1:15.34. Shireen Crumpton second in the open women 1 :15.45, Kerrin Williams in only his second half marathon 1:17.30, Victoria Beck 1:19.42, Sarah Rhodes 1:36 .02, Wayne Van Gorp 1:36.37 and Barbara Patrick 1:38.08.

Ultra Marathon runner Val Muskett did 3:30 in the marathon and in the 10 km Paula Whiting was first women in time of 36:13 with her training partner Rachel Kingsford second 36:27.

For those club members who did stay behind there was a pleasant club run and walk from the club rooms with a good number showing up. Most of the groups went all over different parts of town - the medium / medium fast / med slow pack under the leadership of Alex McEwan went up to Forrester Park and ran around the lower tracks of Bethune's Gully and around the track that was going to be used for the national cross country champs a couple of years ago (but never was) and back to the clubrooms at a fast, furious pace. Different people took some people back along the way, as I said it was a number of packs made into one. Andrew Hall and Kevin Duggan did there best to keep the run fast at every chance they had with the rest of the pack following as best they could. The slow pack went into cards and drove down to Sawyers Bay where Lynette Hall lead them up over the hill over the Junction down North road where they saw the medium pack sprinting back to the club. The other packs went through the gardens and through Ross creek.

There will be no run from the clubrooms this week as it is the Edmond cup on Saturday so there will be a joint run there.

Hill City Report - 24 May 2009

24 / 05 / 2009

On Sunday a large number of our clubs athletes competed in the Barnes Handicapped Cross Country races at Kettle Park in wet underfoot conditions.

The first race of the day was the Men's 5km (four laps). David Mackle and Morris Hall were in the first three people through out the first couple of laps before Morris Hall hit the lead on lap three and held it until about 200m from the finish (where the faster and younger runners swallowed his lead up and passed him). Mike Wakelin got second fastest time with Campbell Garry the third fastest. The club took out the teams race for the second year in a row, Other club members to have good runs were Stephen Bloomfield, Andrew Hall, Kevin Duggan, Wayne Van Gorp and Tom Hunt.

In the under 16 girls race Meg McKay was first across the line after taking the lead from early in the first lap of two and was never challenged again. Sophie Russel, Shuna Pali and Natasha Chignell had good runs as well. The girls took out the under 16 team's race as well.

In the Boys Under 16 race Sam Bremer was first to cross the line and Cameron McNoe took out the fastest time, the club took out the teams race as well.

In the Boys Under 12 the boys took out the teams race with some very good running and the girls finishing second.

Like the Men's race, the Women's race came down to a sprint finish after three laps. One of the women being Frankie Priest who came through the field and crossed the line second and was also second fastest women of the day. Other club members to have good runs were Rachel Van Gorp, Barbara Patrick and Mrytle Rough .

It was so encouraging to see our club performing so well in all the age groups so early in the season.

Good luck to the athletes competing in the Christchurch Half and Full Marathon and to those doing the walk as well. There will be a club run and walk from the clubrooms this Saturday.

Hill City Report - 16 May 2009

16 / 05 / 2009

The club had a very good day at the Ponydales Cross Country Relays on Saturday.

The day started off with the first race featuring the Masters Men and boys under 16. The first leg belonged to Mike Wakelin who powered away from the rest of the field to set up the Hill City Masters Men's no. 1 team to win over the Leith Masters no. 1 team. The other three members ran sensibly to hold on to that lead. The team of Mike Wakelin, Alex McEwan, Andrew Hall and Richard Murphy won by 12 seconds - braking the record set in 2007 by 9 seconds.

The Under 16 Boys race saw a dominance of our club with the no. 1 team of Ben Jowsey, Toby Batchelor, Michael Ogle and Cameron McNoe winning from the boys no. 2 team and third going to the no. 3 team.

The second race of the day was the Senior women, Masters Women, Girls Under 16 and the Social/ Composite/Mixed teams. The race was dominated by two Senior Women teams with Hill City no. 1 and Otago University no. 1 fighting it out with the Hill City team of Shireen Crumpton, Paula Whiting, Rebekah Greene and Rachel Kingsford winning the race by over a minute.

The Under 16 Girls no. 1 team came second with the no. 2 team coming 3rd. In the composite teams race the Mixed Mens team came third and the no. 3 team fourth In the next race. The 12 and Under teams did battle with the boys no. 1 team of Ben Scorgie, Peter Malteno, Oliver Chignell and Oliver Knopp taking out the race.

The final race saw the Senior Men do battle and the no. 1 Hill City Senior team (Oliver O'Sullivan, Alex Gurrie, William Scorgie and Campbell Garry) in a very tight battle with Ariki for second and just being pipped for third, which is an outstanding result for them.

It is great to see the club in a healthy state and such very good early results. This Saturday there's a club run and walk from the Clubrooms and on Sunday is the Barnes Cross country Handicapped races.

Hill City Report - 9 May 2009

09 / 05 / 2009

There was a very big turn out of members on Saturday for the club run from the clubrooms despite the cold weather. Most of the packs went through Ross Creek where there was shelter from the wind and any rain.

The fast pack went out with Ollie O'Sullivan for an hour, the medium fast pack went out with Cameron McNoe leading them up to McGowns track and back along with Alex Gorrie, William Scorgie and Ben Jowsey. The medium pack, which ended up being very big, went out with Alex McEwan up through Ross Creek and through the town belt as far as Moana Pool then down Stuart Street to the Railway Station back to the club. In that pack was Shorty Morris, David Hallaway, Vanessa Grey and Bella Bloomfield as well as her father (who some how got separated from the packs but he still made it back ok to the clubrooms for afternoon tea).

Well done to Morris Hall who completed his 40th marathon in Rotorua on the same weekend as the Lovelock relays.

This Saturday is the Ponydale relays so there will be no club run.

Hill City Report - 2 May 2009

02 / 05 / 2009

What a fantastic Lovelock Relays our club had on Saturday.

It started off with Men's Masters no.1 team taking it to the strong Leith no. 1 Masters team with Mike Wakelin having a great first leg and blitzing the field to give the Masters team a very handy lead, then Andrew Hall held his ground as the Leith team started to eat into the lead. They regained the lead in the third leg but couldn't really pull away from us and still held on to win by 12 seconds an improvement over last years gap of 45 seconds. Mike Wakelin took out the Masters Men's fastest time and then later in the day ran in our Senior Men's no. 1 team.

This was backed up by the senior women's team winning by a big margin and breaking the record by 15 seconds and with out Rachel Kingsford.

Our Senior men then stepped up with an awesome performance by a mixture of Master, Juniors and Senior to put in a huge battle with Ariki. With Ollie O'Sullivan taking the lead on the first leg and only losing the lead on the last leg by some strong running by the Ariki runner, Elliot gave it everything he had and fell into a heap at the end. Not bad for a team that was given no chance at all by the paper.

Also our children were in dominating form as well so good on the club and well done.

There is Club run and walk from the clubrooms this Saturday.

Ponydales coming up 16th May.

With last weekend being Easter a few hardy members went through to Wanaka to compete in the Shoe Clinic Southern Lakes Half Marathon and 10km on Saturday. Bryan Simpson came 3rd in the opens men's half marathon with the time of 1hr 17min, while James Park came 3rd in the Master's Men's 50+ in 1hr 29min.

A small keen group of club members that stayed in Dunedin made the most of the first unofficial club run over Easter for a couple of years. There were four small groups such as the fast-pack lead by Andrew Hall (who had already been out for a hard run in the morning) went up Signal Hill. The slow-pack went for a run through Ross Creek with Richard Barker while the walkers went down the waterside track to Ravensbourne and were out for almost an hour and a half, while Alex McEwan took the children's pack or child through the gardens after he too had been out for a good early morning training run. Then they all had a good chat and a feed with some Easter eggs.

This Saturday is the Official Opening club run and walk of the season so please be there and ready to run or walk by 1:45pm and please bring a plate for afternoon tea.

Hill City Report - 05 April 2009

05 / 04 / 2009

The weather was stunning for the clubs unofficial run from the clubrooms. With many of our teenage athletes away at the Secondary Schools South Island Athletic Champs in Invercargill and some of our senior members competing in the Three Peaks race the next day, there was a few hardy members who made the most of the great conditions.

Andrew Hall took the faster runners up through Ross Creek area while Alex McEwan took the children up through the tracks and through the Northern Cemetery and then through the Gardens and back while the walkers under the guidance of Kevin Murphy went up a similar path, while the slower runners under the leadership of Merriles Williams went up through Ross Creek and part of the Town Belt.

Well done to our athletes who competed in The Three Peaks race with Tom Hunt finishing second overall and 1st in the open men, Bryan Simpson was 10th in the open men's, Matt Bixley was 8th over all and came 3rd in the masters men's 35+ with Kevin Duggan 4th. James Park came 5th in the masters men 50+ and Morris Hall 9th.

Oliver O'Sullivan was in the winning team and Shireen Crumpton was in the winning mixed team.

There will be an unofficial run from the club for those not going away over Easter.

Hill City Report - 22 March 2009

22 / 03 /2009

Last week saw the final two inter-club meetings of the season with one being a twilight meeting on Wednesday night and the final one on Sunday morning.

A few of the athletes competed at these either using them as last minute preparation for the Track & Field Nationals in Wellington this weekend or to finish off their season.

On Wednesday night Lauren Wilson won the Women's 15-16 100m while her mother Liz won the Master's Women's 100m.

Paula Whiting ran her self into medal contention winning and breaking 4min 30sec (4min 28.85sec) in the Women's 20-34 1500m while her training partner Rachael Kingsford came second.

Tom Hunt came 3rd in the Mens 20-34 1500m while Sophie Russel came third in the Girl's 14 and under 1500m.

Fran Myres-Baird won the Women's 15-16 400m.

On Sunday Jarrod Adams threw his personal best throw in the shotput to win the Men's 20-34 shot put after earlier winning the discuss. A strange and funny sight was to be seen at the shot put as Harrier Manager and master athlete Alex McEwan turned up and said he would have a go after winning the master's Men 800m. Lets just say he won on not a very big throw. Sheridan Labes won the Girl's 14 and under Shotput while Chris McNoe won the Boy's 14 and under Shotput after winning his 800m.

Shireen Crumpton won the Women's 35+ 3000m (and is looking good to win a medal at the Nationals) and Oliver O'Sullivan won the Men's 20-34 3000m.

Good luck to our atheletes competing at the nationals in Wellington and don't forget it is the third fun run in the fab four 5km run and walk stride.

Hill City Children at the Colgate Games

With the help of Bronwyn McNoe this week report is about the Children's Section success at this years Colgates Games.

Hill City junior athletes recently competed very successfully at the South Island Colgate Games in Invercargill. There were 740 athletes representing 40 clubs from the South Island and 20 clubs from the North Island.

Our young athletes won the most medals they have ever won at one games with a total of 31 medals ( 6 gold, 13 silver and 12 bronze). All of our Children's Sections athletes performed brilliantly with most either winning medals or pennants, making finals or doing personal best times or distances.

The 12 year old Mixed Medley Relay Team (Sam Watson, Chris McNoe, Sophie Russell, Meg McKay and George Woodhouse) won a gold medal and broke the Otago best performance time.

Three of our athletes won five medals each:

The other Hill City juniors to take gold medals were George Woodhouse in the 80m hurdles and the 13 year old medley relay team (Charlotte Holman, Zac Watt, McKenzie Haugh, Kendelle Stockdale and Sam Bremer). Congratulations to the other medal winners you were all great and the future of the Hill City club is in good hands with the Children's Section.

Hill City Report - 17 January 2009

17 / 01 / 2009

Happy new year to all of you! On Saturday the 17 January a few hardy Hill City souls pushed off the Christmas and new year cobwebs and then braved the rainy downpours and went out to the first weekly meeting of 2009 in Mosgiel. The conditions out at memorial park were not too bad - they were a bit wet as was shown by the low turn out.

The Major race of the afternoon was the Caledonian Society Scottish Shop Handicapped Mile - Alex McEwan came third and also was fourth fastest over all. Other Hill City athletes that ran in the mile were Stephen Bloomfield, Chris O'Kane, Bella Bloomfield, Jack Bloomfield and Steve Pinker backing up in the mile after only having just finished the 5000m.
